“You can motivate and inspire others. When you’re passionate, you’re able to share your vision and rally other people around that vision.”
- Eric Fortenberry, OrgSync Founder and CEO
College Speaker Pete Mockaitis interviewed Eric Fortenberry, OrgSync’s Founder and CEO, as part of the Student Leadership Podcast. Some of our favorite excerpts from the interview are listed below. In them Eric outlines what makes a vibrant campus, best practices for student organizations, and advice for student leaders.
Characteristics of a vibrant campus
Eric: Often it takes a little bit of digging and getting to know people on the campus to really figure out what is…The thing that I’ve found is that when there’s a common vision for the institution and for the campus, and they’ve got a really strong campus community…when everyone there is really passionate about the institution, it helps them build a really strong campus community.
Best practices from student rockstars
Eric: The people that really thrive are the ones who are just genuinely passionate about what they are doing, about the organization’s mission, or whatever the cause is. That passion will really invigorate membership.
Eric: [Organizations have] got to do a lot of marketing. You’ve got to start with a strong web presence and have a place that students can go to get information. Leveraging social media is great, but it’s also the traditional marketing efforts … trying to make sure that you’re getting your message out about your organization in every form and fashion that you can.
Thoughts for student leaders
Eric: For students and student leaders, it’s really important that you get involved and you take on leadership roles. College is really a great opportunity to do that. A lot of times it’s in hindsight when students realize how valuable that opportunity was…The best piece of advice I ever got was from my dad. He told me that you can’t boil the ocean in a day. This really set in…It’s important to understand that building any organization is a marathon…you’ve really got to be committed.
