Campus Life Adopts Online Management System

February 15, 2011

Here is a great article we all enjoyed from one of our campuses. The article was originally published in The Samford Crimson by Logan Heim on Februray 9th, 2011.

Described by some as the Facebook and Twitter for student organizations, OrgSync, an online management system tool for campus organizations, has recently been adopted by Campus Life and implemented with a variety of groups across campus.

“It is not just a website,” Assistant Dean of Campus Life Renie Moss said.

Designed to help student organizations better connect with their members and other organizations on campus, OrgSync is an interactive online community management system that works to centralize campus life activities, as well as improve communication and efficiency among campus organizations.

“It seems to be the industry leader in providing an interactive online leadership community for campuses,” Moss said.

The site offers more than 50 tools that together revolutionize the way campus administrators, student organizations, and students communicate and interact.

Panhellenic, IFC, SGA, and the Community Service council are a few of the organizations currently testing the OrgSync system.

“It’s very efficient in reaching different areas,” junior English major and Panhellenic president Savannah Cyree said. “I think that it is going to make Campus Life’s jobs a lot easier.”

The system allows students to access and manage multiple organizations under one umbrella.

“Communication with different groups is much easier,” Cyree said. “Since more than one organization is using it, you can have an OrgSync account and be a member of a variety of different groups so you are able to see what is going on and make changes under one central page instead of word of mouth discussion.”

With OrgSync, students and organizations can create and update profiles, manage events, create calendars, upload files, keep track of dues, send messages to members and much more.

Organizations are also provided with access to administrative powers allowing them complete control over who can view their profiles as well as what information is available to their members.

“That administrator will be the one who determines who joins their OrgSync group,” Moss said. “From there they have the ability to text message or email their members.”

“They can even link it [OrgSync] to their Facebook account,” Moss said.

The OrgSync homepage will look very familiar to students, closely resembling that of sites like Twitter, Blogger or Facebook.

“Students don’t look at something static anymore,” Moss said. “Students want to see something interactive because they want to see the life of the campus changing everyday.”

The online system also allows organizations to be more environmentally conscious through online availability and submission of forms.

“It’s a lot less paperwork,” said Cyree. “You’re saving paper and not having to worry about files being lost. Forms are submitted online and you only have to print them as needed.”

According to Moss, OrgSync is planned to be fully incorporated throughout campus on April 9.

“There will be a student organization leadership day that we have planned on Sat. April 9,” Moss said.

Campus Life is requiring that at least one leader in each registered student organization on campus to participate in this day.

“That is the day that we will train every organization by virtue of that leader attending on how to use OrgSync,” Moss said. “We feel strongly that this day is going to be revolutionary in terms of online communication for students and student organizations. It’s something that has been missing for a long time. ”

The leadership day will also be a day where students can learn more about planning events and time management as well as budgeting and financial management. Another part of the day will include a town hall discussion where Campus Life hopes to communicate to students where they stand and recap how things have gone so far this year.

“Who better to ask than the student leaders?” said Moss.

Once all organizations are on board, Moss hopes that OrgSync will allow the website for campus life to be much more interactive and appealing to students. The site will include event calendars as well as video montages of the various events going on across campus.

“I hope it provides a different aspect of what it is to be a student at Samford, and it will become truly an online community,” Moss said.

OrgSync will be available to students 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at no extra cost to them or their organizations.

“This is your campus life fee at work,” Moss said. “We feel that OrgSync is a really great investment to give students the ability to communicate with each other and give organizations the tools that they need to be a more vibrant campus.”
